SUFFOLK, Va. — A Suffolk man was one of 28 people nationwide to win the $1 million prize in Saturday’s $949 million Powerball jackpot. Matthew Brewer said he isn’t a regular Powerball player. The auto mechanic said he gets in the game, “when it gets too big not to play.”

Brewer said he bought three Powerball tickets and used Easy Pick, allowing a computer to randomly select the numbers on his tickets.

In fact, his ticket was just one number away from hitting the record jackpot.

“It would have been nice to win the whole thing, but I’m not going to argue with this!” he said.

The winning numbers for the drawing were 16-19-32-34-57 and the Powerball number was 13. Brewer said he checked his numbers Sunday morning, that’s when he discovered he matched the first five numbers. He said he plans to invest his winnings.

Since no one matched all six numbers in Saturday’s drawing, the estimated jackpot for the Wednesday, January 13, drawing extends the record prize to $1.4 billion.

The current cash payout is $868 million. A ticket holder would only get $1.4 billion if they took the payout in the form of an annual payment.

Powerball is sold in 44 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
