NORFOLK, Va. -- Police officers shot a man who killed a Police K9 during a seven-hour standoff in Norfolk Sunday night into Monday morning. Police were called to the man's Land Street home at about 6 p.m. Sunday as he and his wife fought inside. The wife, who escaped the home, told police her husband had a gun.

"He knew it wasn't going to end well. He said in his position as a gun salesman -- his life was over now," neighbor Gene Strickland told WTKR. "I was texting back and forth with him saying you know this is not going to end well for you. Please surrender, we're praying for you."

After hours of negotiation, the man eventually walked out of his home -- but with his weapon.

"Police gave several verbal warnings to the man to drop the gun and surrender," a Norfolk Police spokesperson said. "The man instead opened fire and shot and killed a Police K-9. Police were then forced to shoot the armed man."

The man was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries.

The neighbor, who said he saw the shooting, offered different details.

"They had already shot him in the leg and he was on the ground and the German Shepard was eating him alive," Strickland said. "So he took the gun to his left side and shot the dog."

The man, whose name has not yet been released, faces abduction, robbery, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and brandishing of a firearm charges. More charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
