Two people were killed and at least four others seriously injured Friday in a shooting near a pub in Tel Aviv, Israel, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told CNN.

Large numbers of police officers in Tel Aviv are searching for the suspect, Israeli police spokesperson Luba Samri told CNN.

“From the initial investigation of the incident, it is not possible to determine if this is a criminal or terror attack,” Samri told CNN. “Both directions are being investigated.”

A masked attacker dressed in black

Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv told CNN that two people were dead, two were badly injured and one person was lightly wounded. The discrepancy in the number of injured — whether it was three or four — could not immediately be resolved.

The police said the attack took place at 130 Dizenghof Street. The business at that location is called Sidewalk Cafe.

Israel has recently been hit by a wave of stabbings and other kinds of attacks on civilians and soldiers, a wave apparently not directed by any particular organization.

Two witnesses told Israeli news outlets that someone dressed all in black, with a black mask, carried out the attack with what looked like a military-style assault rifle, CNN’s Ian Lee reported. Police have not confirmed witness accounts about what the attacker was wearing or what type of weapon the suspect had.
