FORT LEE, Va. – When it came time for Wayne Covil’s random act of kindess, he headed to Fort Lee.

Wayne visited several places to surprise soldiers with simple, kind gestures to help them out and let them know how much they are appreciated.

He knew he would find some soldiers picking up lunch at Subway, so he stood near the register and kept buying meals.

“We appreciate everything you do for our country, and happy holidays,” Wayne said to a soldier.

“Thank you very much,” he said.

“We are giving back to the community, and hope that you pay it forward to someone,” he said to another soldier.

Wayne met soldiers from Georgia, Virginia, even as far as the Virgin Islands.

Then he went over the barbershop and bought a soldier’s haircut.

All month long, members of the CBS 6 news team went into the community, and offered people kindness through random acts. All we asked is that those we helped find a way to pay it forward, sometime in the future. If you've been inspired to pay it forward, click here to share your story.

WTVR CBS 6 partnered with Union Bank & Trust for the Month of Giving.

This is the last day of our month of giving, and we aired Wayne’s in honor of his birthday. Happy Birthday, Wayne!
