RICHMOND, Va. — A local Fortune 500 is on the hunt for downtown digs. Multiple sources have said CarMax is looking to lease office space in downtown Richmond. The move would be the first for the Goochland-based used car retailer inside the city. CarMax spokeswoman Trina Lee confirmed the company is reviewing potential locations downtown “to support our home office growth.” She did not elaborate.

Lee declined to say which properties the company is considering or how much space it is looking for, and she would not go into details as to how the space would be used.

“I don’t have further details at this time,” she said.

Lee did say the downtown space would be in addition to the company’s 250,000-square-foot headquarters in the West Creek office park in eastern Goochland. The 130-acre site, at 12800 Tuckahoe Creek Parkway, currently houses 1,086 employees.

“We will be continuing to maintain West Creek as our primary headquarters,” Lee said. “We own this land; we own the building. This would be an additional space.”

Lee said space is at a premium at that building, where the company is currently hiring for 92 positions, according to postings on its website. CarMax also has two local retail locations, at Innsbrook and in Midlothian. It moved its corporate offices to West Creek from Innsbrook in 2005.
