RICHMOND, Va -- If you're going to travel on the roads for the holiday weekend and will have a baby or young child with you, the Richmond Ambulance Authority and AAA-Mid Atlantic want to make sure he or she is secure.
The Richmond Ambulance Authority, or RAA, and AAA are offering free car seat checks in Richmond on Tuesday and Wednesday. Car seat technicians will be making sure the car seat or booster seat is the right one for your child, and that it is set up correctly.
They said one of the most common mistakes parents make is not installing the seat tightly enough.
"Once a car seat is installed, it should pass the one-inch test," said Liz Papelino, RAA's lead child safety seat technician. "At the belt path, where the seat belt goes through or where the latch is secure, it should not move more than one inch side-to-side or front-to-back."
Technicians will be both installing car seats, and demonstrating how to install them.
Tuesday's safety event takes place at the Walmart on Sheila Lane from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Another will be held on Wednesday at the Target on Forest Hill Avenue from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
