LAFAYETTE, Co. — A mother mourning her young son is receiving comfort in an unexpected way.

KUSA reports that Carole Adler’s son, Taylor Thyfault, 21, was an Army veteran and in the final stages of cadet training with the Colorado State Patrol when he lost his life.

Taylor was at a crash investigation when he was asked to help deploy stop sticks in an attempt to stop the suspect in a high-speed chase.

He pushed one man out of the way of the suspect, who then hit Taylor and another man. Taylor died at the scene.

Carole said she and her son texted each other often throughout every day. She said she was the last person Taylor texted on the day he died.

“Every day, it hits me like a ton of bricks, when I can’t text him,” Adler told KUSA. “We’re just that close. Everything that happened in his life was in my life.”

“I don’t think your texts are going where you think they are,” he said in the text.

The two still sometimes text back and forth, and Husley said he feels like someone else is looking after him. He also says the experience has renewed his passion and energy for what he does, and he feels a connection with Taylor.

“[Taylor is] still trying to make a difference,” Husley said.
