RICHMOND, Va. -- One man was killed and a seven-year-old girl was hurt in a triple shooting at a Richmond apartment Monday night, according to Richmond Police. Officers found the third shooting victim, an adult male, outside an apartment at the Blue Ridge Estates complex.

"At approximately 9:25 p.m., officers were called to the 300 block of Red Ash Road for a report of shots fired," a Richmond Police spokeswoman said. "Officers arrived and located three persons who were suffering from apparent gunshot wounds."

The man who died was found outside, behind the apartment. The child and man injured in the shooting were found inside the apartment.

"They were transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not considered life threatening," the Richmond Police spokeswoman said. "The Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of the death."

Neighbors report hearing 5-6 shots Monday night.  At the scene, popped balloons and crushed party whistles littered the area in front of the apartment where the two surviving victims were found.  Images from the scene show a "Happy Birthday" banner hanging inside the apartment.

Police said they had "strong leads" in the case, but did not release a description of the shooting suspect. Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000 or submit a news tip here.

The identity of the man who was killed will be released once his family is notified.
