NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. -- Police identified the woman shot and killed inside a Nottoway home Wednesday morning as 35-year-old Lakisha S. Knight of Crewe. Virginia State Police said Knight was shot and killed after she broke into a home on East Courthouse Road.

"Investigators have determined Knight was armed with a handgun when she broke into the residence," a Virginia State Police spokeswoman said. "She then threatened at gunpoint a 63-year-old male resident. A struggle ensued between Knight and the male resident, and Knight was shot."

The man suffered minor injuries, police said. Knight died at the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond will complete an autopsy on her body. An 11-year-old boy inside the home at the time was not hurt.

"The shooting remains under investigation. Once the investigation is completed, the results of the investigation will be provided to the Commonwealth’s Attorney for a decision on whether or not criminal charges are warranted," the state police spokeswoman said.

Investigators said the Knight and the man knew each other. Family members of the man said he and Knight dated in the past.
