HENRICO COUNTY, Va – Crews quickly extinguished a kitchen fire in Henrico County Saturday night.

Firefighters were dispatched to the 800 block of Early Forest Circle just before 10:20 p.m.

“First arriving units were on scene in six minutes and reported smoke coming from the front of the single story home,” Henrico Fire spokesman Capt. Danny Rosenbaum said. “Inside fire crews found fire in the kitchen of the home. The fire was quickly extinguished and contained to the kitchen.”

Rosenbaum said the fire, which was marked under control at 10:25 p.m., was caused by cooking and deemed accidental.

Everyone inside the home made it out safely. Because the fire was quickly put out, the family will only be displaced for a short time.

Henrico fire officials stressed cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home injuries. And the main cause of kitchen fire is unattended cooking.

Here’s what you should know about how to prevent cooking fires:

• Be on alert! If you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop. Stay in the kitchen while you are frying, grilling, boiling or broiling food.
• If you are simmering, baking or roasting food, check it regularly, remain in the kitchen while food is cooking, and use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
• Keep anything that can catch fire — oven mitts, wooden utensils, food packaging, towels or curtains — away from your stovetop.
