CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Police are investigating a fatal shooting involving an off-duty Richmond police officer at a gas station on Midlothian Turnpike Saturday morning.
Officials said the off-duty officer was having his car washed at the Sunoco gas station at 7559 Midlothian Turnpike around 9:40 a.m. when a male suspect got into the vehicle and drove it through the car wash. The off-duty officer approached the suspect and told him to exit the vehicle, leading to a confrontation, according to Colonel Theirry Dupuis. During the confrontation, the suspect was shot. He was transported to Chippenham Hospital where he later died, Dupuis said.
The suspect's identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Fred McCletchie came to Sunaco to get his car washed around 8:30 a.m. When he came back, McCletchie said the gas station was surrounded by police.
"It was so shocking," said McCletchie, "I have never seen something like this happen in the area."
"Chesterfield County Police are working with Richmond City Police and continue their investigation into this incident," Dupuis said.
