CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- A 73-year-old woman was handcuffed after she pulled out a gun in an effort to stop an armed robbery at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Hopkins Road in Chesterfield Monday morning, according to witnesses. Police have not yet confirmed those witnesses accounts.
The woman was later released when it was determined she had a concealed carry permit, those witnesses said. The woman never confronted the armed robber.
The suspect fled the store, but was later arrested when his car ran off the road.
"Witnesses provided officers with a description of the suspect’s vehicle. An officer spotted the suspect vehicle in the area, and attempted to initiate a traffic stop," Chesterfield Police spokeswoman Liz Caroon said. "The suspect vehicle made contact with a police vehicle and did not stop and a pursuit began. The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle went off the road in the area of Belmont Road and Chippenham Parkway."
No one was seriously hurt, police added. The suspect was taken into custody for robbery with additional charges pending, police said. The Walmart Neighborhood Market remained closed while police investigated the incident. Anyone with additional information can submit a news tip or photo here.
