CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — A former Riverside Regional Jail Authority Probationary Jail Officer was arrested for raping a teenage girl.

“On September 5, police received a report of a sexual assault that occurred on Aug. 27 in the 21200 block of Halloway Avenue,” a Chesterfield Police spokeswoman said. “The victim, a 16-year-old female, reported that an adult male suspect who is known to her sexually assaulted her.”

Jarrell Barnes, 21, of Halloway Avenue, was fired from Riverside Regional following his arrest.

Barnes was arrested September 9 and charged with rape, object sexual penetration and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, police said.

Police did not disclose how Barnes and the teenager knew each other prior to the assault. Police confirmed a family member of the teenager reported the crime to police.

“Barnes began his employment with RRJA on June 22, 2015 and was terminated on September 9,” Riverside Regional Jail spokeswoman Capt. Laura Gray said. “RRJA has cooperated with the Chesterfield County Police Department in reference to their investigation.”

This is a developing story.
