92 flags rise ahead of UCI Road World Championships, some upside down

RICHMOND, Va. –An air of festivity in Shockoe Bottom, ahead of the UCI Road World Championship races that begin in under three weeks.

Over the weekend, workers put up 92 flags downtown, representing the countries taking part in the races.

Some of the flags were hung with the wrong orientation, including the United States flag, but the mistakes were corrected Monday.

“We were advised this morning that installers did begin to hang some flags over the weekend, and that some of the flags were hung incorrectly,” said city spokeswoman Tammy Hawley. “The flags are being corrected as the remaining flags are being installed.”

Around 1,000 cyclists from around the world will compete in Richmond, and approximately 450,000 spectators are expected throughout the nine-day event.

The races start on September 19 and end on Sept. 27.
