FAQUIER COUNTY, Va. -- A search warrant obtained by CBS 6 details what police found in the car of the killer who murdered two Virginia journalists before turning the gun on himself.

Investigators recovered a Glock pistol and ammunition inside the rental car that the killer crashed along Interstate 66 in Fauquier County.

The driver of the vehicle failed to yield when a trooper attempted a traffic stop. He was observed placing an object to this head, according to Virginia State Police.

The vehicle then left the roadway and crashed in the center median.

When police approached the car, they found Flanagan suffering from a head wound.

In addition to the firearm and ammunition police recovered, they also found 17 stamped letters and a briefcase that contained three license plates, a shawl, and an umbrella, according to the search warrant.

There was also assorted handwritten and typed letters, a to-do list and notes.

News reports cited an image of the killer taken by the slain photographer when his camera turned in surprise at the gunfire.

That may have helped police and or employees identify Vester Flanagan II, who formerly worked at WDBJ, as the suspect.

The search warrant also shows that investigators identified Flanagan based upon a text message sent to a friend "making reference to having done something stupid."

Police, citing “scene security concerns,” have taken the vehicle to the VDOT facility in Marshall, Virginia to be processed.
