LOUISA COUNTY, Va. -- State police are investigating a crash that killed an 18-year-old man and sent a woman to the hospital Wednesday morning in Louisa County.

Sgt. Steve Vick, a spokesman for Virginia State Police, said the two-vehicle wreck happened around 8:45 a.m. in the 1800 block of Belle Meade Road not far from north Sign Board Road.

Officials said a Hyundai Elantra was traveling north on Belle Meade Road when it crossed over into the southbound lane and hit a Volvo head-on.

Vick said Michael S. Phillips of Bumpass died at the scene.

"The driver of the 2005 Volvo, Sara D. Thaw, 28 of Bumpass, Virginia was transported to UVA Hospital via med-flight with serious injuries," Vick said. "A one year old in the car was not injured and was properly restrained."

Troopers said speed may be a factor in the crash.
