CAROLINE COUNTY, Va. — We now know what is behind those mysterious loud booms folks heard across Central Virginia this weekend.

Fort AP Hill in Caroline County posted on their Facebook page they were conducting artillery and explosives training during the day and night.

“Low cloud cover may cause higher noise and vibrations,” the post read.

There has been no word yet when those exercises will be completed.

Several viewers in Ashland, Glen Allen and Mechanicsville contacted WTVR CBS 6 to report hearing a series of loud blasts.

“Just heard a really loud boom in Mechanicsville,” Michael Pegram‎ posted on the WTVR Facebook page at just after midnight Sunday. “Sounded almost like a shotgun. I’m not sure what it was. Anyone else hear anything?”

Then Sandy Bowles Heath asked at 9:10 a.m. “what are the loud booms I can hear in Glen Allen?”

If you have questions, call the fort’s public affairs office at 804-633-8324 or after hours at 804-633-8888.
