Tire fire could impact air, water near Waverly

SUSSEX COUNTY, Va. — The Virginia Department of Emergency Management and the Department of Environmental Quality continue to monitor the situation at Emmanuel Tire in Waverly.

A fire burned at the tire grinding plant early Tuesday morning. While fire crews have the fire under control, the government agencies are monitoring for air quality and water runoff issues.

The fire was first reported at about 2 a.m. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

While no roads were closed due to the fire, VDOT put up signs along 460 alerting drivers to the smoke.
