LANCASTER, Nh. -- Two people are dead and 15 were injured Monday night in New Hampshire after a circus tent collapsed during a strong storm, officials said.

State police said about 250 people were initially trapped at the Lancaster Fairgrounds, about 90 miles from Concord, New Hampshire.

Gov. Maggie Hassan activated the state's emergency operations center.

The cause of the collapse was not immediately clear although a storm was moving through at the time, with one-inch hail, 60 mph winds and lightning, authorities said.

Officials didn't release the names of the deceased, only describing them as a "young man and a young girl."

They also couldn't say exactly how many people were injured. Officials were checking with local hospitals.
