CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. - Andrew Payne's toy poodle is like a child to him. He said she will bring him along to many places he goes, but would never think about leaving him in a hot car.

"If it's at a restaurant we'll just keep him at home because it's important that they stay cool," he said.

Which is why he and others are upset to find out a woman was charged with animal neglect.

Chesterfield Police said Jameika Meadows left the dog in a hot car for at least 50 minutes on Sunday evening.

Police said it happened in the parking lot of Chesterfield Towne Center.

"It just doesn't make sense," said Payne, "It's actually cruel."

A spokeswoman for the police department said the dog is okay and wasn't taken away from Meadows.

CBS 6 has previously reported that concerned calls over dogs being left in cars has increased in Chesterfield County during the extreme heat. Police said part of that has to do with people being more aware and calling if they see something.

"We are responsible for their welfare and they can't talk, they can't tell us anything," said Melody Ramsey, who owns two dogs and a cat.
