RICHMOND, Va — As the heat index reaches into the triple digits in the Richmond metro area, Dominion Virginia Power is offering tips to save on utility bills.

Some tips are common: raising the thermostat to 78 degrees, and closing the blinds so the HVAC unit does not have to work harder to cool a room. In addition to those, Dominion had several other suggestions:

  • Unplugging devices from wall sockets before going on vacation
  • Making sure to replace or clean air filters every month
  • Insulating the water heater, and setting it to 120 degrees
  • Using an outdoor grill when it’s hot outside, so the HVAC unit does not have to work harder to cool a room
