RICHMOND, Va. -- Max Chisholm, the man wanted for stabbing a couple while they slept, was arrested Tuesday during a traffic stop at 18th and O Streets in Richmond. Chisholm was taken into custody without incident, the Sussex Sheriff's Office confirmed.
Sussex County Sheriff’s Office alerted law enforcement and the media to be on the lookout for the stolen, blue, 2010, Ford Escape that Chisholm was believed to be operating. A Richmond Patrol Officer spotted the car and made the arrest, a U.S. Marshal's Service spokesman said.
"This is another great example of how teamwork and interagency communication can bring a quick arrest in another very tragic case in the region," Bobby Mathieson, U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of Virginia, said.
Before the arrest, Chisholm's family members provided background information on the 21-year old Cosby High School graduate who was the subject of a two-day manhunt.
A close family member, who asked to remain anonymous, called Chisholm a "narcissistic sociopath." The family member said Chisholm was known to use people and then drift away. A psychiatrist called Chisholm one of the biggest liars he had ever seen, the family member added. The relative said most people found Chisholm charming and polite at first, but after several months, his true colors would emerge.
Stabbed in their sleep
Chisholm is accused of breaking into the home of Hugh and Carol Mayes Monday morning and stabbing the Sussex couple multiple times while they slept. Hugh Mayes is the pastor at Shiloh Baptist Church in Carson, Virginia. The couple was flown to VCU Medical Center where they are in intensive care.
Chisholm had lived with the couple prior to the stabbing.
"Everyone fell in love with Max and they did everything for him," church member Janet Brockwell said. "When he got a car and job, though, things changed."
Church members said things changed so much that the pastor and his wife asked him to move out of their Sussex home. Detectives said he’d been gone for about a month.
Who is Max Chisholm?
The child of Russian heroin addicts, Max Chisholm was adopted and brought to the United States from Russia when he was seven years old, family members said.
While at Cosby High School in Chesterfield, Chisholm won the regional wrestling champion as a senior.
His coaches described him as a determined, hard worker on and off the mat; however, they said they had not spoken with him in more than a year.
Where is Max Chisholm?
The search for Chisholm began shortly after help arrived for Hugh and Carol Mayes. Investigators believe Chisholm was driving a stolen blue Ford Escape with Virginia tags XTX-6239.
Tips led U.S. Marshalls to Colonial Heights Monday afternoon after someone claimed they spotted Chisholm, but investigators were unable to locate him. Richmond Police took Chisholm into custody during a Tuesday afternoon traffic stop.
