NORFOLK — A would-be robber was taken to the hospital after he was bloodied and bruised by the people he tried to rob, according to Norfolk Police. Police were called to the 800 block of W. 43rd Street early Saturday morning to check out a report of a man with a gun.

“Upon arrival, it was discovered that three men were walking in the area, when a suspect approached and brandished a handgun,” police said. “The suspect then demanded their property and belongings. The men attempted to fight back and were able to detain the suspect until police were called. Upon police arrival, the suspect was immediately taken into custody and the handgun secured without further incident.”

Kentrail H. May, 21, is charged with three counts attempted robbery, three counts use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and one count malicious wounding. May and the would-be robbery victims all suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The group that detained May was made up of Old Dominion University students, WTKR reported. May is currently being held in the Norfolk City Jail without bond.
