RICHMOND, Va. -- Neighbors in Chesterfield are in shock after hearing about someone in their area charged with delaying or destructing mail.

"It's just crazy that someone has that kind of job and would abuse something like that," said neighbor Alan Carter.

According to court documents  Shaun Sledge was caught on surveillance ripping open people's mail, and even taking a shirt out of a package then putting it out of the camera's sight.

Documents also stated that Sledge would open up the mail and replace what was inside, then seal it back up.

"He could be stealing our mail, so you never know who you're living beside," said another neighbor.

A spokeswoman for the USPS said that Sledge worked as a letter carrier for about seven months.

She also said that he worked at the Saunders Carrier Annex on Brook Road and is now on administrative leave.

CBS 6 went to Sledge's home Thursday to speak with him but no one answered the door.

Still, several neighbors said the charges will have them on higher alert.
