RICHMOND, Va. — If you liked today’s weather, you’ll probably be happy with Sunday’s forecast.  It will be a virtual carbon copy, with a slightly higher chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm.  Mother Nature should cooperate with the Greek Festival and other outdoor festivals/activities.  Any pop-up storm is likely to occur between 3PM and 9PM.

Here’s a look at our in-house model forecast across the Commonwealth at 3PM Sunday.  Scattered storms are most likely to develop over the higher terrain north and west of Richmond during the afternoon, with a couple sneaking into central Virginia by early evening.  Any storms could contain torrential rain, but overall rain chances will only be about 30%, so don’t cancel any outdoor plans.

Rain chances will rise significantly by Monday afternoon and evening, as a cold front slowly approaches from the west.

Numerous showers and storms will be over the area Monday night and Tuesday.  This could lead to rainfall totals of an inch or more.  Heavier thunderstorms could produce isolated amounts of 2-3 inches by Wednesday morning.  A few storms may contain damaging winds and hail, so we’ll be closely monitoring the severe weather threat.

A few showers may linger on Wednesday, before the cold front finally moves far enough south and east to allow somewhat drier air to take over for the second half of the week.

By the way, our average temperature for the month of May stands at 71.1°.  This ranks as the 7th warmest May on record in Richmond. With tomorrow’s expected hot weather, we may jump up another spot or two.

Make it a great Sunday!
