Police release names of suspect, victims in double homicide

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Police have released the names of the suspect and the victims in a double murder in Chesterfield County.

The bodies of a 34-year-old woman and one-year-old girl were found inside a home in the 20300 block of Ferintosh Court Friday afternoon, according to Chesterfield Police.  Police found the bodies when they responded to the home at about 12:10 p.m. for a welfare check.

"Upon arriving and checking the residence, police found two victims, Morgan R. Rogers, 34, and Leah Rogers, 1, deceased from gunshot wounds. Both victims lived at the residence." Chesterfield Police spokeswoman Elizabeth Caroon wrote in an email. "Police continue their investigation into this incident."

Officials said 46-year-old Stafford L. Shaw Sr., of the of the 9000 block of Shewsbury Drive in New Kent, was killed after igniting a four-vehicle wreck Friday afternoon on I-295 in Mechanicsvillethat left two other people dead and two others injured.

Police said Shaw, who was Roger's estranged boyfriend, was wanted for two counts of second degree murder; two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, two counts of violation of a protective order and one count of transporting a firearm while under an emergency protective order.

"Chesterfield Police contacted Virginia State Police for assistance in stopping the Chevrolet Corvette Shaw was driving," Caroon said. "Shaw’s vehicle was involved in a fatal crash on Interstate 295 in Hanover County that is being investigated by Virginia State Police."

That four-vehicle crash left the driver and passenger in one vehicle dead and sent two other drivers to the hospital. The names of the deceased are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

Family members confirmed the one-year-old was Shaw's child.

A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, said he was shocked by the massive police presence when he came home on Friday.

"There were 10 to 12 police cars and the mobile command unit," he said. "There was police tape around the home and mailbox."

He added he often saw children playing in the cul-de-sac.

"I have not noticed anything suspicious over the last few days," he said.
