PETERSBURG, Va. -- Police are investigating a shooting that left one person dead and two others wounded in what one resident called a "hail of gunfire" in Petersburg Sunday night. Witnesses said that multiple shots were fired just after 9 p.m. in the 800 block of Hinton Street.

When EMS crews arrived, they found the three victims lying on the sidewalk. The scene was described as chaotic with a lot of neighbors gathered in the street yelling and crying. The first officer who arrived issued a “mayday” call because of the hectic scene. That call meant that any available law enforcement nearby should respond.

According to sources, Virginia State Police, deputies from the Dinwiddie County Sheriff's Office, Colonial Heights Police and Prince George County Police were on the scene.

The three victims were taken to transported to Southside Regional Medical Center. That's where one victim was pronounced dead. Another victim was then flown to VCU Medical Center, and a third victim, in stable condition,  was also transported to VCU Medical Center.

CBS 6 Senior Reporter Wayne Covil, who was the first reporter on the scene, said one woman described what she heard as a “hail of gunfire.” In fact, she said the shooting spree was so extreme that she was unable to count the number of shots fired.

Additionally, a man who lives near where the shooting happened spoke with WTVR CBS 6 on the condition of anonymity.

"I was sitting in my apartment and I heard multiple gunshots," he said.

The man said he then heard another round of gunfire from a different gun before a car sped away.

A few minutes later, he said police were blocking off the street to traffic.
