St. Louis, MO  — A De Soto, Missouri woman was arrested in St. Louis after police allege she passed out with a toddler in the vehicle, while driving on Interstate 55 — as a result of using heroin, KMOV reported.

Mandy Schlef, 33, was driving on I- 55 Tuesday evening she fell asleep, causing her car to veer into the median, according to police. When officers arrived on the scene, they noted Schlef had her eyes closed and had a spoon and mirror in her lap, as well as a syringe in her right arm. Capsules with residue were found on the driver’s seat, according to a probable cause statement.

Once awoken by a paramedic, police said Schlef stated that she needed to quit doing heroin.

The 3-year-old child was in a car seat in the backseat at the time of the accident. The probable cause statement did not say if the child was injured in the accident.

Schlef is charged with endangering the welfare of a child, unlawful use of drug paraphernalia, and driving while under the influence of a drug.
