RICHMOND, Va. — Did your go-to grocery store make Consumer Reports list of the country’s best?

Each year Consumer Reports conducts a supermarket survey which asks shoppers to score stores in categories such as customer service, cleanliness, product variety, local produce selection, organic food prices and store brand quality. Consumer Reports rated 68 supermarkets across the country based on a survey of nearly 63,000 readers.

Overall, only about 60 percent of shoppers said they were “highly satisfied” with the quality of their store’s poultry and meat, Consumer Reports said. Only half were happy with their store’s prepared-food and bakery options.

For the 10th year in a row, Wegmans topped the Consumer Reports survey.

While there are no Wegmans in Richmond right now, there are two stores in the works, one in Short Pump and one in Midlothian.

“It’s going to sound cliché, but our employees are our secret sauce,” Jo Natale, Wegmans’ vice president of media relations,” told Consumer Reports.

The Consumer Reports National Top Five looked like this:

  1. Wegmans
  2. Publix
  3. Trader Joe’s
  4. Fareway Stores
  5. Market Basket
  6. Costco
  7. Raley’s
  8. Sprouts Farmers Market
  9. The Fresh Market
  10. Stater Bros

Locally available grocery stores such as Whole Foods and Harris Teeter also earned high scores. The  Consumer Reports Bottom Five consisted of Shaw’s, Pathmark, A&P, Walmart and Waldbaums.

“Every store I go in has room to improve,” the Walmart CEO told Consumer Reports. “If we nail those, one store at a time, our short-term performance gets better.”

Americans average 83 trips a year to the supermarket, according to Consumer Reports.
