WHEELING, Mo. — A 10-year-old boy has been killed and two other children were injured in a crash after a sports utility vehicle hit an Amish horse-drawn carriage in northwest Missouri.

KCTV reports that the child, identified as Joshua L. Leinbach, of Wheeling, was driving the horse-drawn buggy when it was hit, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

The wreck happened about 7:35 a.m. as Joshua was carrying Katelyn S. Leinbach, 8, and Amanda Leinbach, 7, to school. They were the only occupants inside the buggy.

Livingston County Sheriff Steve Cox said the buggy was traveling east on Highway B near Livingston County Road 277 when it was hit by a Ford Expedition.

Authorities say the driver of the SUV was blinded by the sun and hit the carriage from behind, but the investigation is still ongoing. The vehicle’s driver, a 44-year-old Wheeling woman, was not injured.

However, the three children inside the buggy were ejected. Joshua was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other children were initially transported to Hedrick Medical Center. One of the two children has already been released from the hospital.

The other child was transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital in critical condition.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
