Richmond Police make arrest after shootings at Powhatan Hill Park playground

RICHMOND, Va. – An arrest was made in connection with a Friday night shooting. Richmond Police detectives have charged Xzoyloysius Wood, Jr., 19, of the 4100 block of North Avenue with Aggravated Assault in connection with an incident that occurred shortly after 9 p.m. Friday in Powhatan Hill Park.Two men were shot during the incident. Wood has been charged in connection with one of those shootings. He was uninjured.

Police said that one victim, a 22-year-old male, was found sitting on a porch at Goddin Street suffering from a gunshot wound to the foot.

Officers later found a second person, a 21-year-old male, shot multiple times at the 1000 block of  Garber Street. Paramedics took that victim to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. As of Saturday afternoon, the victim was listed as heavily medicated and in critical condition.

Detectives are continuing their investigation and expect to make another arrest.

Police received several calls about random gunfire prior to arriving on scene. Police believe the two victims were standing in the playground’s concession area when a third individual approached them. Witnesses told police that there was an exchange of gunfire and one of the victim’s confirmed with police that he dropped the gun that he was carrying.

Police thanked several eyewitnesses who provided valuable information that assisted them with their investigation.
