GOOCHLAND, Va. -- Two women from Rockville died Sunday evening after their car was struck from behind by another vehicle, on Interstate 64 in Goochland. Two women and a teenage boy were traveling I-64, westbound, in a 2012 Nissan in the right lane when it was struck in the rear by a 2011 Hyundai Sonota traveling at a high rate of speed, according to police. After being struck the Nissan ran off the road to the right and struck a tree. The Hyundai then struck a 2008 Honda Fit; the Hyundai then struck the guardrail.
The driver of the 2012 Nissan, Sheila P. McCowan, 51, of Rockville, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. The rear seat passenger, Yolanda F. McCowan, 49, also of Rockville, who was wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene. There was a front seat passenger in the car that was not injured. The driver of the Honda, David W. Tillack of Fluvana, was not injured in the crash.
Andrew N. Chavis, 24, was the driver of the 2011 Hyundai that hit both cars. Chavis, of Goochland, was transported to VCU Medical with serious injuries.
At this time, police have charged Chavis with Driving Under the Influence. Police said speed and alcohol, not weather, were factors in the crash.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:07 p.m. on I- 64 westbound at the 170.3 mile marker, near Shallow Well Road.
The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team assisted with the crash, which is still under investigation.
