CHESTERFIELD, Va. — The driver of a tractor-trailer was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning. The tractor-trailer was the only vehicle involved in the accident on Hull Street Road, near Sappony Road. For a landmark, the location is between the Amelia Courthouse and the Richmond Metro Zoo, past Moseley, Va.
The driver was Welford D. Smith, age 67. According to Chesterfield Police, he died at the scene of the crash. Police responded to the scene at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday. The tractor-trailer was traveling east on Hull when it went off road and hit a tree in the median.
All eastbound lanes were blocked earlier, but traffic is getting through one lane while cleanup ensues. One lane of Hull Street is closed in each direction between Sappony Road and the 240,000 block of Hull Street Road.
UPDATE: As of 5:30 p.m. all lanes were opened.
