CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. -- Around 2 p.m. Saturday, 30-year-old Natali Castellanos-Tyler lost control of the SUV she was driving and hit a tree along the 15400 block of Genito Road.
"It was faced that direction,” said David Schuman.
Schuman had just gone outdoors to fill up his propane tank Saturday afternoon.
"And I saw a car it had wrecked across the street,” he explained. “And I saw some bright colored clothes and toys."
Chesterfield Police say Castellanos-Tyler’s three-year-old daughter was in the vehicle when the single-car accident happened. Police say that she lost control of her car and hit a number of trees.
Schuman and other drivers went to check out what happened and ended up comforting the little girl.
"She was pretty brave,” he said. “She stayed strong and I talked to her a little bit along with some others."
The child was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
"I’ve got a little boy, he’s two-years-old and I just thought that if he was in that circumstance I’d want him to have somebody to talk to and keep him as long as possible," Schuman said.
The little girl is recovering, however, her mother died later at the hospital.
Her family describes the Chesterfield resident as a loving mother of three.
Police believe the crash happened when the road started getting wet from the sleet.
"I don’t think there’s anything she could have done to prevent it,” Schuman said. “The conditions were bad and everything."
