Wedding in a Week Finalists: Theresa & DeVan

Theresa and DeVan's Submission:

Hello everyone at CBS 6! We're Theresa and DeVan and we're going to tell you why we believe we deserve to win a "Wedding in a Week". DeVan and I have been together for 3 years now.

We met when we were both students at VCU; a mutual friend of ours threw a small party that we both attended. A couple weeks after the party we went on an impromptu date to the movies and the rest was history. According to him, he knew he'd marry me from the moment we met, and I believe him. We have been discussing marriage for the last 2 years but we had some life experiences and money issues that have prevented it.

About two weeks ago DeVan came to me and said "I don't know how it'll happen, but I'll give you the wedding you want this year. I'm going to make it happen. I'm so ready to be married to you and call you my wife."

Then a week later the "Wedding in a Week" contest tweet appeared on my twitter timeline and it was almost like fate. We were originally aiming to get married in the summer but we honestly have no idea how it would happen.

Currently, we're in the process of possibly adopting 3 of my little cousins, ages 1, 3, and 7. They ended up in foster care and if we don't take them they'll end up in the system where they'll most likely be separated. We couldn't stand by and let that happen so we stepped forward to help. Taking on three young children is a huge responsibility so our number one priority right now is making sure we save as much money as possible, which means a nice wedding is, realistically, out of the question. Neither one of us have families that are in a position to provide a lot of help so the majority of the costs would have to be covered by us.

As much as I would love to have my princess for a day, amazing wedding, our budget really only allows me a backyard hitch with close family members and a less than amazing wedding dress. This, of course, is not how I'd like to remember one of the most important days of my life. In the 3 years we have been together we have faced a lot of challenging problems. The death of a close loved one and two lost pregnancies.

Where most people would break, we only became closer and stronger. We have so much hope for the year 2015 because when you hit the bottom, the only place left to go is up. Starting the year off with beautiful wedding full of people we love would be magical. We both want nothing more than to spend the rest of our lives together and starting that in style sounds awesome! We are both surrounded by so many people who love and support us and want to see us succeed.

When I first mentioned considering the contest all of my friends said "If you don't enter it we'll do it for you". So, I'm taking their advice and taking a leap of faith and hoping for the best. Please, CBS 6 and all their viewers, help us make our dreams come true. Help two people with so much promise in life become one and, of course, live happily, ever, after.
