DETROIT — Detroit’s public schools were preparing to dismiss students early Tuesday after power was interrupted at the city’s public buildings, a school official said.

Power went out at government and other public buildings in Detroit at about 10:40 a.m., DTE Energy spokeswoman Randi Berris said. The cause of the outage wasn’t immediately known, Berris said.

The outage trapped some people in elevators in several government buildings, and firefighters were trying to free them Tuesday morning, Detroit Fire Department Chief Dale Bradley said.

The outage isn’t believed to have affected residences, Berris said.

Because of the outage, about 87 Detroit public schools were preparing to dismiss students early, Assistant Superintendent Steve Wasko said.
