RICHMOND, Va. -- When it comes to Black Friday shopping, Erin Williams considers herself a professional. She's been waiting in lines for the latest deals for the last 15 years.

Like Williams, millions across the country look forward to the experience every year. However, this time of year also brings out the thieves who target shoppers in the large crowds.

"I have my guard up to protect myself," said shopper Elizabeth Clark.

To avoid becoming a victim, experts recommend that when you are shopping, use a credit card instead of debit. Banks have 10 days to investigate and during that time you could be short of money.

Also, be aware of camera phones. Experts said someone could take a picture of you with your purchases and send it to someone outside who could end up following you to your car.

"It's sad that this day in age every year they are trying something different," said Williams.

For men, it's recommended not to keep your wallet in your back packet. For women, don't leave the purse in the shopping cart and it's best to just put your items in your front pocket. If you have to, use a purse that crosses over in front of your body.
