ETTRICK, Va. -- For the first time in school history, a woman will lead Virginia State University. Dr. Pamela Valleria Wilson Hammond was named Interim President at Virginia State on Thursday. Her term begin January 1, 2015.

Dr. Hammond had been Provost at Hampton University.

"In considering candidates for this important position, what emerged in Dr. Hammond was an individual with a remarkable depth and breadth of knowledge in academic leadership, administration, development and strategic planning processes," VSU board of visitors Rector Harry Black said. "Dr. Hammond brings to VSU a nurse’s compassion along with the pragmatism of a seasoned academician and administrator."

A search firm is expected to begin the process to find a permanent president.

Last month Virginia State University announced President Keith Miller would step down at the end of the year.

"President Miller is to be commended for his integrity and putting the interests of Virginia State University and its students at the forefront of this difficult decision,” Black said in a written statement. “The decision is in character with his dedication as a leader committed to service."
