HOPEWELL, Va. — The Hopewell man witnesses spotted land on the street below the Route 10 bridge on Riverside Avenue on the Hopewell side, Wednesday afternoon has died.

As a result, the Hopewell Police Department is investigating 25-year-old John Allen Sculthorpe’s death.

Sculthorpe was walking in the westbound lanes of Route 10 on the Hardaway Marks Bridge when he fell over the edge onto Riverside Drive.

After the incident, Sculthorpe was hospitalized at John Randolph with life-threatening injuries, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

Multiple sources told CBS 6 that the victim had a John Randolph ID bracelet lying beside him on the street. Sources said he had been a patient at John Randolph that day in the ER and walked out without being discharged.

Investigators are trying to figure out if Sculthorpe fell, jumped or was struck by a vehicle.

Sculthorpe is described as a white male, 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 210 pounds. He was wearing black and white pants, a beige t-shirt, and white tennis shoes.

If you have any information that could help investigators, call Hopewell police at 804-541-2222.
