HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- A man who got out of his car and ran from police was hit and killed by a car on Interstate 95 Tuesday night. Police have not released the man's name and are still investigating the circumstances around his death.

The man ran from an officer who pulled over to provide assistance to the man's disabled vehicle along I-95 just south of Exit 83/Parham Road in Henrico County at about 8 p.m. Tuesday.

When the trooper arrived on scene, the vehicle’s driver was already outside the car.

As the trooper approached, the man walked up the shoulder away from the trooper and then ran across northbound travel lanes and onto the median, police said.

Police said that for the man's safety, the trooper ran to his aid. When the trooper approached the man in the median, a struggle ensued and the man ran from the trooper into the southbound lanes. A southbound vehicle wasn't unable to avoid the man and struck him.

All southbound lanes of I-95 just north of Chamberlayne Ave. /Rt. 301 at mile marker 82 were closed as police investigated. All lanes reopened at about 3 a.m.

The trooper and the driver who hit the pedestrian were not harmed.
