Victim shot near Virginia State University was not a student

ETTRICK, Va.- Chesterfield Police are investigating an overnight shooting near the campus of Virginia State University.

Police responded to the area of East River Road and Williams Street, near the entrance to Virginia State University, for a report of a subject who had been shot. Police located the 18-year-old male victim, who had been shot in the leg. The victim, who is not a Virginia State University student, was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

East River Road was closed for five blocks from Sheffield Place to James Street, that's by the Ettrick Deli.

VSU sent out this email alert to students:

VSU Police Department received a call of a shooting that originated at an off-campus location on Williams St at River Rd in Chesterfield County. A 19 year old VSU Freshman received a non-life threatening leg wound and has been transported to the hospital. The situation is currently being investigated by Chesterfield County PD. Subjects involved have not been apprehended. Please remain shelter-in-place until further notice.

The pictures below in the photo gallery were taken from Sheffield and East River Road, right next to the entrance to VSU near Rogers Stadium.

At this point, the investigation indicates that the shooting may have been part of an altercation that began at a residence in the 20400 block of Williams Street. The investigation indicates the parties involved in the shooting are known to each other.

Police continue their investigation into this incident.
