CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — The newest, and cutest, baby animal born at the Metro Richmond Zoo is not yet on display to the public, but you can check her out right here.
After a 13-month pregnancy, Brazilian Tapirs Pershing and Pico welcomed their calf into the world on July 29. It is the tapirs first child as a couple.
“Pershing and her baby are being kept inside for a few weeks to allow time for bonding and the baby to grow stronger,” zoo director Jim Andelin wrote in an email announcing the birth. “Mom and baby are doing well, and we hope to have them on exhibit soon.”
Brazilian Tapirs are endangered due to deforestation and hunting in the tropics of South and Central America, Andelin said.
