HANOVER COUNTY, Va. —  It appears 65-year-old Willard E. Carpenter, Jr., of Totopotomoy Trail in Ashland, suffered a medical issue before he crashed into a tree and died, according to Hanover Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Chris Whitley. The investigation into Thursday’s crash was on-going as of Friday morning.

Carpenter’s 2000 Chevrolet SUV hit the tree at a “low rate of speed” at about 6 a.m. Thursday, Whitley said.

The crash happened along the 11200 block of Rocky Ridge Road, near Greenwood and Winns Church Roads.

“We extend our sincerest condolences to the Carpenter family as they attempt to deal with this tragic loss,” Whitley said.
