RICHMOND, Va. -- The opposition to a new stadium in Shockoe Bottom is still going strong even though the mayor withdrew his proposal for a new ballpark in May.

Dozens of protesters gathered on the Boulevard on Sunday in hopes of forming a ring around the Diamond. However, the gathering fell short of the 1,000 people they were hoping for.

The group, which is opposed to a new baseball stadium in Shockoe Bottom, would like to see city leaders focus their efforts on renovating the Diamond with regional cooperation.

“Years ago the RMA has a plan to refurbish the Diamond and you had Henrico and Chesterfield and the City of Richmond -- and all of that unraveled,” one protester said.

Developers have been meeting with city officials to discuss plans for a new stadium on the Boulevard, but city council has not taken up any new proposals.

Memo. The city leaders don’t care. They have sold the city to people in Connecuit who can’t even balance their state budget to a group of Nutty owners who want to shove the Screwball stadium in the bottom. All we can do is boycott the games and don’t attend the games and make them not be tops in attendance

Ron , You are mistaken. The teams owners are not shoving anything down anyones throat. They really don’t care where the stadium is built, just that one is built somewhere. I doubt you have ever been to a game anyway so boycott all you want. You may want to read up on this situation before you comment.

Athynz, I’ll bet you are a “plus sized” woman with a big, hairy mole on your chin. That’s how it works.

      • athynz

Timmay even if I was a woman I’d still be more of a man than you are. Get over it bub.

David – you just can’t stand me using your tactics… and for some reason you just can’t leave me alone. Why is that?

  • athynz

Where did they advertise their desire to have supporters form a ring around the stadium? This is the first I’ve heard about this.

This was not an “official” organized event and did not have the financial backing that the Pro Bottom folks have. As you know, the Pro Bottom has financial backing by Venture Richmond, the City of Richmond (yes, I believe they do have people on staff reviewing drawings, and assisting with organizing events for the “Pro” people), and everyone else that has something financially to gain if the stadium is built in the Bottom.

This event had two weeks of free feature coverage in Style Weekly, including a full Back Page article by Terry Rea and tons of advertising by advocates on social media, but still could only attract dozens to this highly promoted event, a sign of the depth of the opposition.

Notice how protestors usually all look the same? Either obese, or hipsters?
I’m not saying all of them, but the majority.. Society’s rejects, form a posse to fight the world’s injustices!!. lol

      • Mo Fiscal Conservatism

Heck, just look at the photos of this little tissy. It absolutely is true. College dropouts, art students, art grads who can’t get a job, obese people. It’s the city’s rejects for the most part. Now I know, you’ll name a friend or something who isn’t, but as I clearly said “most” not all.

The only way to get the idiots to listen is for us to boycott the games. If the people who want baseball on the boulevard simply boycott then they get less revenue so if the supporters in the bottom want it so bad let then but tickets to the empty diamond and let’s see how quickly things change.. Yes everybody let’s boycott the rest of the season in order to save baseball on the boulevard. Let’s hurt then in their pocketbook

    • B Addy

You are barking up the wrong tree Ron. The only “idiots” involved in this sit on the Richmond City Council. Not the baseball team. See you at the game!
