Playground at Richmond school catches fire

Posted

RICHMOND, Va. -- A community is left devastated after finding out the playground at Overby-Sheppard Elementary School in Richmond caught fire around 12:15 p.m. on Saturday.

"It's hurtful that you have people out there that do stuff like that," said one neighbor.

Fire Crews said no one was injured and the fire was just isolated to the playground.

School board member Kim Gray said the cost to replace the playground is going to be around $150,000.

"We have to find the money in our Capital Budget which is already squeezed to the brink," said Gray.

Gray has been on the board since 2009 and said she's seen over five playground fires on school grounds..

Neighbors in the area said they hope fire crews are able to find out who is responsible.

"It makes you sick," said Georgerone Mason. "It's just said, it's pitiful."

Fire crews are still investigating the cause.
