Police: Man kills wife, children on Father’s Day

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. – A Chesterfield father shot and killed his wife, son and step-daughter before killing himself, Chesterfield Police said. Investigators identified the victims in Sunday’s triple-murder suicide as:

  • Renotta I. Jernigan, age 30
  • Seth Jernigan, age two
  • Alexis F. Kellas, age nine

Barry C. Jernigan, 35, was also found dead inside the family’s Fox Maple Terrace home, in the McCormick Woods subdivision.

“At this point, the investigation indicates that Barry Jernigan shot his son, step-daughter and wife before turning the gun on himself,” police said.

Police responded to the family’s home just after 10 p.m. on Sunday to check the welfare of a subject, police said.

“Upon arrival, police heard multiple gunshots. Police soon found bystanders attempting to aid Renotta I. Jernigan, 30, and her 2-year-old son, Seth Jernigan, who had both been shot.”

Jernigan died on scene. The child later died at the hospital.

Police found Kellas, Renotta Jernigan’s daughter, and Barry Jernigan inside the house. Both had been shot and were pronounced dead.

A “Renotta Jernigan and Children Benefit Fund” was set-up to assist the family with burial costs. Donations can be made at any Bank of McKinney branch.

The investigation into the shooting remains on-going, police said. Anyone with any information should contact the Chesterfield County Police 804-748-1251.

What is wrong with the world??? How was this the right answer? People may wonder why I have been looking into doomsday prepping and all….well it’s because of things like this. I feel like there’s something in the water, worldwide. So much cray cray out there.

Where do people like you live? We’ve been a violent, irrational animal from day 1. The only difference between early humans and us is WE have the technology to share all this crazy **** over long distances in a blink.

Humans aren’t more violent or crazy, you just have more knowledge of it.

Doomsday prep all you please if it calms you. You’re still going to be a corpse if it comes to fruition :P

Personally death seems better than starving and rotting for a few months in a smoking crater that was once humanity.

Haha very true and valid points. The percentages really haven’t changed but the numbers have simply due to expansion of the human race. I, however, don’t plan on killing myself if things end and just want to be slightly prepared in the off chance I happen to survive whatever does happen…if anything.

very distasteful how 6 news showed fire&ems washing the blood off the street, no respect at all for the victims…

my sincere and deepest sympathies to the family and friends, and prayers to the officers and first responders who had to work this.

Thanks for sharing. You are right we all have Martial issues and I will be the first to admit it and to the people who say they don’t stop living in fairyland . This is devastating

Very sad!! My son was in the same class as Alexis!! God help their family and friends! 😢

Yes, of course she was always smiling – she never had to grow up and get a real job!!! ALL the women in my family have always worked to help take at least some of the financial stress off their husbands. Why should the man have to shoulder the entire financial burden??? I have met MANY women over the years who admitted they deliberately got pregnant again so they would NEVER have to go back to work, but would never let their husbands know about it. They said that staying home with their kids was WAY easier than the stress of a real job, and they didn’t care if their husbands had to suffer working longer hours to support them. If this woman was “smiling all the time”, clearly she had zero stress from her “job” as a mother, while her poor husband was probably extremely sleep deprived from working overnights just to support her while she stayed home and played “dollies” all day. The father of the older child must have felt lucky that this lazy, narcissistic “smiling all the time” mother found another sucker to support her.

Christina Pattee, WOW… DO YOU HAVE A HEART? DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN? ARE YOU A MOTHER? A PERSON LIKE YOU SHOULDN’T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT ANYBODY ESPECIALLY THE DECEASED!!! WHILE YOU SIT AROUND THINKING OF NEGATIVE THINGS TO SAY THERE’S A FAMILY THAT IS LAYING A MOTHER AND HER TWO SWEET INNOCENT CHILDREN TO REST AND SO WITH THAT BEING SAID YOU NEED TO KEEP YOUR NEGATIVE, COLD HEARTED MOUTH SHUT AND I’M SURE YOUR HUSBAND WOULD BE GLAD TO HEAR SOMEONE SAY THIS TO YOU HIMSELF!!!! I PRAY FOR THIS FAMILY!!! I ALSO PRAY FOR YOU!!!

    • sw

You are pathetic. First off it is a known fact that it is more stressful to stay home with children then to work outside the home. Second I do believe I heard she had worked since her husband couldn’t keep a job. Not that any of this has anything to do with the coward who took a gun and killed his whole family including two small innocent children.

You should know what the duck you are talking about before you start talking trash about someone you don’t even know. She was the one who worked and supported their family, he could never keep a job. How dare you talk about someone who has just been murdered like that, when you know nothing about them!!!! You’re a sick individual!!!!

    • KD

Christina Pattee- I just reported your despicable comment. You are one cold-hearted and horrible individual to blame the victim for anything. A mother who loves her children so much that she would stay home to raise them is a BEAUTIFUL, UNSELFISH thing to do- just as one who goes out to work to support them is as well. Shame on you for your horrible comments. No one EVER deserves to have their life taken away from them in this manner for ANY reason, and then be ridiculed and judged for it. I pray you never have to suffer losing someone this way. How do you sleep at night with such ugly thoughts in your heart? May God have mercy on you, and I pray for the entire family and friends who are hurting by this tragic loss, and who may have been hurt even further by your incredibly insensitive comments about their daughter, friend, sister, and step-mother.

Christina Pattee…keep your negative comments to yourself. How disrespectful to speak of a person who is deceased by way of horrific tragedy in the manner you just did. If you don’t know the family and their situation don’t comment on it. Renotta did work OUTSIDE of the home to support the family…so shut your mouth.

Christina Pattee – WOW! You should be ashamed of yourself! To speak of this deceased lady in such a way is DISGUSTING! Along with this family and their friends, I will pray for YOU!

  • TONYA

My heat goes out to the family and friends of the deceased. These were babies and none of them deserved to die the way that they did. He should have just killed himself if he couldn’t live without her. Who was he to take three lives? Just take yours!!!

  • Marie

It’s some racist people on this site because if this man was black the focus would not be on the victims like in this case where everyone is sending their condolences and saying how sad this is (like they should). If he was black, the focus would be on the culprit, not the victim. It’ll all be about how black people are this and that. A bunch of stereotypical stuff.

    • Ron Melancon

To Yiseng I am concerned with your comment. While I understand we also have Women who also do the same. Let me remind you about the women who drove her children. Into the ocean. We have compassionate men who are exceptional fathers and we have deadbeats but I know first hand we have a Women and Moms who are just the same as this man was. To label a man like me and the rest of us that way is wrong. It is you that seems to have an issue with men. And may I suggest you seek professional help because you need it
