Local Boy Scout Troop retires flags at Saturday evening ceremony

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — A local Boy Scout Troop decided to hold a ceremony to retire flags in honor of Flag Day.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of America’s national anthem, the “Star Spangled Banner.”

In honor of the momentous holiday, Boy Scout Troop 498 held the flag retirement ceremony Saturday evening in the Saint Benedict Catholic Church parking lot on Belmont and Hanover Avenue. The ceremony followed the 5:30 p.m. mass.

About 20 worn flags of various sizes were respectfully retired in keeping with the provisions of the United States Flag Code.
