Hottest weather since last summer arrives this week

and last updated

So far this year, Richmond International Airport has hit 94° two times, its hottest temperature thus far.

This week will produce the hottest stretch of 90° weather since the middle of last July.  Highs will get close to 100° Wednesday and Thursday.  While many of the record highs will be safe, there is the potential to tie them Tuesday and Wednesday.

Along with the heat will come an increase in humidity.  High temperatures, combined with muggy conditions (dew points near 70°), will produce dangerous heat index values: near 100° Tuesday and near 105° Wednesday and Thursday.  Click here for some information and safety tips about heat.

Even though this streak of hot weather will occur this week, astronomical summer does not begin until Saturday morning.

A shift in the jet stream will allow the heat and humidity to sit in our area through the end of the week.

We are seeing signs that the jet stream will change to allow somewhat cooler air to return early next week.
