RICHMOND, Va. - A Richmond Police officer is recovering at VCU Medical Center after being hit by a driver during an early morning traffic stop.

Police initially stopped the vehicle for a traffic violation in Gilpin Court  around 3 a.m. But the driver sped off once officers approached the car, police said.

Eventually two Richmond Police cruisers cornered the vehicle on Lamb Avenue, but when officers approached the car to speak with the driver, the vehicle spun around and hit one of the officers, police said.

Northside residents, including Dahvid Johnson woke up the chaos and commotion.

"If you're wrong, you're wrong. If you do the crime, do the time," Johnson said. "To the person that did it, you stupid man."

The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries. A second officer was sent to the hospital for moral support.

Police were able to detain a passenger in the suspect's vehicle. The passenger was treated for minor injuries.

The driver of the car was able to get away.

"It's disheartening that you don't think about somebody else's life," Johnson said. "You have to take into account older people and kids especially in this area over here."

Police have not yet released a description of the suspect nor his vehicle.

Anyone with information about the suspect's whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000.
