VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WTVR) -- A Virginia Beach mother is grieving the death of her son after he was attacked by a swarm of killer bees in Texas.

Sonja Turner told WTKR that her son Aaron Turner died after the attack on Tuesday morning.

Turner said that the 30-year-old was working for a fencing company in San Antonio when the attack happened.

"They hit a bees nest and a swarm of bees came up like a big old fire,” Sonja Turner said. “Aaron ran into where they were coming from -- all he could do was fall to his knees."

Turner graduated from Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach and moved to Texas with dreams of becoming a pro football player. His mother said he had a football scholarship and had played for arena teams in Texas.

Tuner said that her son meant the world to her and that she is still coming to terms with the news.

"It was unbelievable. All I could do was drop the phone and scream and holler, ‘Not my child,’” Turner said. “I can’t eat... All I can think about is my son lying there with a thousand bees on him.”

The family is in the process of planning Turner's funeral.
